Badger's Football Field Transforms to Ice for Outdoor Hockey Classic!

Becker Arena Products recently tallied an assist in transforming the University of Wisconsin's football playing field into an NCAA-regulation hockey rink.

the rink was constructed for the Culver's Camp Randal Hockey Classic, which takes place on February 6.  The event features the Badger men's and women's hockey teams battling opponents - and the elements - during a double-header of outdoor games.

A project team from Becker traveled to Madison to participate in the installation of the temporary rink at Camp Randall Stadium, which seats 80,321 fans during the football season.  Back at the office, the rest of the Becker team kept an eye on construction progress via Web cam ink from the Badger's website.

Becker Arena Products was subcontracted through Ice Rink events to supply dasher boards, base coat ice paint (Lumin'Ice Pro) and Ultimate Vinyl Hockey Lines and Ice Logos.  robb Olexin, becker's resident paint expert and national project developer, was on-site to install the paint, lines and logos.

"the board we provided were a pre-owned set that we had in our Rink Equipment Resources inventory.  They had to be reconfigured to meet NCAA rules, "said Olexin.  "We built panels which allowed us to move the players' boxes from one side of the rink to another so they would be opposite from the penalty box and score keeper's booth." 

In addition, Becker Arena Products was contracted to supervise and assist set up of the boards and glass.  Experienced installer Kurt LeVasseur and John Reagan Jr. traveled to Madison with Olexin to handle the job.

chad Minichillo, inside sales consultant, worked closely with the University of Wisconsin to supply adhesive-backed dasher advertising graphics for the entire rink.

this isn't the first outdoor project of this magnitude for Becker Arena Products.  the company had similar involvement building rinks at Lambeau Field for the Frozen Tundra Clasic hockey games in 2006.

"It's a very different type of challenge to be a part of a project like this, "said Olexin.  "You never know what adversities the weather and location might create.  but that's all part of the excitement."
